Treatment detail

Scale & Polish

A routine hygiene visit that removes plaque, tartar and surface staining from above the gumline, then polishes the teeth so they feel smooth and stay easier to clean at home.

Best forAdults and teenagers with generally healthy gums who want to keep them that way, and anyone whose brushing leaves tartar behind between visits.
Suggested frequencyEvery 6 months for most people; every 3–4 months if you smoke, have crowded teeth or your gums bleed when you brush.
Appointment length45 minutes

What's included

  • Gum health check with bleeding and pocket-depth screening
  • Ultrasonic and hand scaling above the gumline
  • Polish to lift light staining and smooth the tooth surface
  • Tailored brushing, flossing and interdental brush coaching

Good to know

Anaesthetic is not usually needed, though numbing gel is available if you are sensitive. Gums can feel tender for a day and teeth briefly sensitive to cold; you can eat and drink straight away.

Treatment detail

Scale & Polish — Extended

The same hygiene treatment with a full hour of clinical time, so heavier tartar, stubborn staining and harder-to-reach areas are all dealt with thoroughly in one visit.

Best forAnyone who has not seen a hygienist for a year or more, or who has visible tartar, tea, coffee or tobacco staining, crowded teeth, braces, bridges or implants.
Suggested frequencyEvery 6 months, or every 3–4 months if build-up returns quickly. Many patients step down to the 30-minute visit once things are stable.
Appointment length60 minutes

What's included

  • Full gum health check with bleeding and pocket-depth screening
  • Thorough ultrasonic and hand scaling, upper and lower arches
  • Stain removal and polish, including around brackets and implant margins
  • Extended time for personalised cleaning-technique coaching

Good to know

Gums may feel tender for a day or two after a longer clean. Avoid strongly coloured food, drink and tobacco for 24 hours so new staining does not settle straight back in.

Treatment detail

Deep Clean (Root Surface Debridement)

A targeted, quadrant-by-quadrant clean beneath the gumline that removes hardened deposits and bacteria from the root surfaces, so inflamed gum tissue can heal and reattach.

Best forDiagnosed gum disease (periodontitis) with deeper pockets, persistent bleeding, bad breath or recession identified at your assessment.
Suggested frequencyA course of 2–4 appointments, then a review at 8–12 weeks to measure how the gums have responded.
Appointment length60 minutes per quadrant

What's included

  • Full periodontal charting with pocket depths recorded per tooth
  • Local anaesthetic so treatment stays comfortable throughout
  • Ultrasonic and hand debridement below the gumline
  • Risk-factor review (smoking, diabetes, medication) and a written plan

Good to know

Expect tenderness and sensitivity for a few days, and gums that look slightly shrunken as swelling settles — a sign of healing. Lukewarm salt-water rinses help; day-to-day plaque control at home is what decides the final result.

Treatment detail

Periodontal Maintenance

The ongoing supportive appointment that keeps treated gum disease stable: pockets are re-measured, returning deposits removed, and your home routine adjusted wherever readings have slipped.

Best forPatients who have completed deep cleaning, and anyone with a history of gum disease, dental implants or early tooth loss in the family.
Suggested frequencyEvery 3 months at first, extending to every 4–6 months once your readings stay stable.
Appointment length45 minutes

What's included

  • Re-charting of pocket depths, bleeding scores and recession
  • Debridement of any sites that have relapsed
  • Implant and crown margin check where relevant
  • Your progress compared against previous readings, in writing

Good to know

Mild sensitivity for a day or two is normal. Missed maintenance visits are the most common reason gum disease returns, so keep to the interval your clinician sets for you.

Treatment detail

Children's Hygiene & Fluoride Varnish

A short, prevention-focused visit that builds confidence: teeth are cleaned, decay risk is assessed with the parent present, and high-fluoride varnish is painted on to strengthen enamel.

Best forChildren and teenagers from around age 3, especially those in braces, with early white-spot marks or a history of fillings.
Suggested frequencyTwice a year; fluoride varnish can be applied up to four times a year for higher-risk children.
Appointment length45 minutes

What's included

  • Gentle clean and age-appropriate brushing demonstration
  • Decay and diet risk assessment with the parent present
  • Fluoride varnish application (22,600 ppm), no injections needed
  • Fissure sealant advice for newly erupted adult molars

Good to know

No eating or drinking for 30 minutes afterwards, and no brushing until the next morning, so the fluoride stays in contact with the enamel and does its job.

Treatment detail

General Hygiene Check-Up

A full oral health review carried out directly by a dental hygienist or therapist under GDC direct access, without needing to see a dentist first. Covers a clinical examination, gum health assessment and an oral cancer screening.

Best forAnyone due a routine review, new patients wanting a full assessment, or those who would rather see a hygienist directly than book with a dentist first.
Suggested frequencyEvery 6–12 months, or more often if your risk factors mean you need closer monitoring.
Appointment length45 minutes

What's included

  • Updated medical history and a discussion of any changes since your last visit
  • Clinical examination of your teeth, gums and soft tissues
  • Oral cancer screening, checking the mouth, tongue, lips and neck for anything unusual
  • Gum health assessment with pocket-depth charting and bleeding checks
  • A written summary of findings, with referral to a dentist if further treatment is needed

Good to know

Dental hygienists and therapists can see patients directly without needing a dentist referral first. If a cavity or other issue needing restorative treatment, such as a filling, is found, you'll be referred on to a dentist.

Dental Hygiene Care

Personalised Preventive Care for Healthier Gums

As a dental hygienist, I help patients improve and maintain their oral health through personalised preventive care. During each appointment, I assess the health of your teeth and gums by looking for signs of plaque, tartar, bleeding and early gum disease before carefully removing harmful deposits that are difficult to clean effectively at home.

In my experience, patients who see the biggest improvement are rarely the ones who brush hardest — they are the ones who learn which two or three areas their own routine keeps missing. Many are surprised to find those spots are the same every day. Using what I see in your mouth on the day, I provide practical, tailored advice based on your individual needs, whether you have crowded teeth, restorations, implants or a history of gum problems.

My aim is not simply to provide a thorough professional clean, but to help you understand why problems develop, make small changes that are realistic to maintain, and feel confident keeping your teeth and gums healthy between appointments.

“Great practice with an attentive and friendly team. I’ve been to several hygienists/therapists before and found Marisa to be by far the most gentle but thorough. Her assistant was also super friendly. I’ll be happy to have my treatment here again in the future and can genuinely recommend the practice to anyone.”

What does a dental hygienist do?

A dental hygienist's main focus is preventing and treating gum disease and helping you keep your natural teeth for life. That means removing plaque and tartar through scaling and polishing, checking for early signs of gum disease and decay, applying fluoride varnish or fissure sealants where needed, and giving practical advice on brushing, flossing and diet that actually fits your routine. As a dental hygienist, I see each visit as preventive care rather than just a clean - I am looking for small changes early, before they turn into bigger problems, and helping patients build habits that genuinely stick.

How often should I visit my dental hygienist?

NICE guidance recommends that recall intervals are based on your individual risk of dental and gum disease rather than a fixed rule for everyone, ranging from a few months up to a maximum of 24 months for adults at low risk (12 months for under-18s). In my own practice, most patients do best with a hygiene visit every three to six months, especially if you have a history of gum disease, smoke, have diabetes, or notice plaque building up quickly. At your first appointment I will assess your gum health and risk factors and agree a recall interval with you, then review it at every visit.

Does a dental cleaning hurt?

For most patients, a routine hygiene appointment is comfortable rather than painful - you may feel some pressure, and occasional sensitivity around the gum line if it has been a while since your last visit or your gums are inflamed. If you already have gum disease, the first visit or two can feel a little more sensitive while the inflammation settles, but this usually improves quickly. I always explain each step as I go, work gently, and can offer numbing gel or regular breaks if you are anxious or have sensitive teeth, so please tell me if anything feels uncomfortable and I will adjust.

How can I tell if I have gum disease?

The earliest sign of gum disease, gingivitis, is usually bleeding gums when you brush or floss, along with redness and swelling. Left untreated, this can progress to periodontitis, where you might also notice gums pulling away from your teeth, persistent bad breath, sensitive teeth, or teeth that feel slightly loose. Gum disease is often painless in its early stages, which is exactly why regular hygiene visits matter - I can spot the warning signs, measure your gum health with a simple probe, and start treatment before any damage becomes permanent.

What is the difference between a dental hygienist and a dental therapist?

Both dental hygienists and dental therapists are GDC-registered professionals who focus on prevention - cleaning, gum health and patient education - but a dental therapist's training also covers certain restorative treatments, such as fillings and extractions in children. I am qualified and registered as both a dental hygienist and a dental therapist, so I can combine thorough preventive hygiene care with a broader range of treatment where appropriate, all within the same appointment.
